We believe in the care and nurturance of the "whole child"...

Our Philosophy...

At Harrisville Pre-School, our premise is “learning through play”.  We believe that children learn most effectively by being actively involved in the learning process.  A child’s development is a dynamic  and continuous interaction of biological maturation and experience.  Play is a dynamic vehicle, which provides a variety of ways, teaching strategies and interactions, which support learning across all domains of development.  It is important for developing self regulation, promoting language, cognition and social competence.

We believe that children should have the freedom to make as many physical, emotional and intellectual choices within the guidance of an adult whenever possible.  It is our intention to provide every child, regardless of race, nationality or creed, with learning opportunities to succeed in an atmosphere of care and of feeling valued.

The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) states that “children experience optimal learning when teaching occurs to match the different ways children learn and develop”.  We believe that it is our sensitivity and deep understanding of these “ways” that greatly improve outcomes for the children enrolled in our program.  It is our goal to provide every child with opportunities to learn through play where his/her cognitive, emotional, social and physical growth is fostered.

Our Curriculum...

It is our intention to provide a well-planned and resourced curriculum, aligned with the Rhode Island Early Standards, that fosters the educational skills necessary for school success, as well as, providing a consistent, nurturing environment that aids in the development of independence, healthy interpersonal relationships, and problem solving.  Learning opportunities and activities are carefully planned with each individual child needs in mind.

Our staff is specially trained in the care and education of preschool children.  We believe that children learn through quality interactions with other children, adults and materials, and that these “interactions” shape their motivations and approaches to learning, such as persistence, initiative and flexibility.  It is these dispositions and behaviors that will affect both their present and all future learning and development.  Teachers are trained in scaffolding children’s learning to enable them to reach their full potential. All aspects of the learning environment and materials are designed and selected to appropriately challenge and meet the growing needs of young children.

Most importantly, we recognize that all children do not walk the same path when it comes to learning.  Every child has his/her own style and develops at his/her own pace.  At Harrisville Pre-School we tailor our curriculum to meet the needs of the individual.  We are committed to understanding the specific needs of your child.  To work in collaboration, with you, setting goals and objectives, throughout the program, that support his/her growth and development.
